Here is a list of toxic and safe food for budgies.

Vegetables: You can feed your budgies vegetables every day or every other day.

Fruits: Once a week is enough to give your budgies fruits as a treat, because fruits contain a lot of sugars.

Nuts: They are very healthy for budgies because they are rich in proteins and are very tasty. NOTE: Nuts contain fatty oils, which is best to feed your budgies once a week or even less.

You can expand how many result you see (default is 25), as well as searching directly across the table of what you are looking for.

Actually I believe salt is toxic. while us humans can tolerate more salt before we get high blood pressure, but birds have much smaller bodies that can kill them faster

No Salt is very toxic, it can tolerate fine amount already included in some foods if given once in two months (not sure). It not only increases blood pressure it harms their vital organ kidney. If humans consume salt in excess it could harm kidney because of blood pressure.

Both salt and sugar are needed but in very small amounts. And as Budgies are among the small species, they require a very very small amount, which they generally intake from the food we provide and minerals. Budgies diet should be a balanced diet, we should focus on greens & seed mix for healthy living.

Make sure your dad has lots of money, they need six monthly health checks with the vet which cost me $100 NZD per bird. Apart from that i’ve spent $5000ish on two very sick budgies in the same year, both with issues that were not avoidable, one was old age cancer and the other a rare genetic disorder. They are not cheap animals to be a parent to, but they are worth every dollar.

help please! i am getting a budgie soon. i had planned to give birdie free range of house and make house safe (and of course have cages and playstands, and not clip wings) BUT MY ENTIRE HOME IS MADE OF REDWOOD, INCLUDING LARGE BEAMS, RAILINGS STAIRS, MOLDINGS, ETC., AND I NOW UNDERSTAND THAT REDWOOD IS TOXIC. What do you suggest? i am very concerned! (and THANK YOU for your wonderful videos and information–i have not had a budgie since i was a child, and i have learned so much-so many things to do differently! THANK YOU for the tinme that you must spend, very generous of you sir.)

Hi! I just want to clarify if shampoo is toxic to budgies? Because one of my budgioes likes chewing my hair

Cooper Dawson

Reply to  Grace

I’m not an expert or anything. However, if you’ve washed out the shampoo and your hair is dry it shouldn’t hurt it. And if your shampoo is non-toxic (I don’t know if that’s a thing) then it should be fine. But just to be safe don’t let them chew your hair if it’s wet and has shampoo on it. Wash it out and dry first.

No, they can’t digest the milk. But you can give yoghurt and white cheese without salt. Yoghurt doesn’t have milk sugar (lactos) and contains lot of beneficial bacteria.

How is peanut butter toxic? I know raw peanuts are because aspergillus but peanut butter is cooked, so it would likely kill any fungus. I’ve seen videos of people using it to train budgies. So could you please clearify this for me? Thank you so much!
